Acupuncture

WHAT IS IT?

Acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine that dates back thousands of years. It involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to eliminate illness and discomfort.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Acupuncture is based on the theory of qi - basic life force energy. Qi flows through our bodies in a series of pathways called meridians. If the qi is strong and free flowing, there is no illness or discomfort. However, factors such as diet, lifestyle, stress, emotions and even weather can affect the flow of qi and cause illness or pain. At certain points along the meridians, the qi becomes stronger and more accessible. The needles are inserted into these points and help to rectify the flow of qi to restore health and wellbeing.

DOES IT HURT?

This is probably one of the most frequently asked questions!! Some people experience a mild stinging or tingling sensation when the needles are inserted, but it is a temporary feeling and most people report feeling very relaxed at the end of a treatment. If you are anxious about needles, it is best to discuss this with your acupuncturist before you begin treatments.

A TYPICAL TREATMENT

The first appointment usually involves a consultation as well as the treatment itself. After filling out a thorough health history, the patient sits down with the acupuncturist to discuss the history itself and any questions or concerns the patient may have. The practitioner will also check the patient's pulse on both wrists and will look at the patient's tongue to aid in a diagnosis. The patient lies down on a massage style table fully or partially clothed (depending on the area being treated). The needles are left in place for 20-30 minutes during which the patient only has to relax. The acupuncturist will come into the room at intervals to check on the patient's comfort and to reassess the pulse.

ACUPUNCTURE AND CANCER

Acupuncture is an excellent form of treatment for people undergoing cancer treatment. It can help with the anxiety and insomnia that accompany an initial diagnosis. During cancer treatment, acupuncture can be effective in treating side effects of chemotherapy and radiation such as fatigue, nausea and vomiting, digestive system symptoms, menopausal symptoms, neuropathy and pain. Most oncologists are recognizing the benefits of acupuncture and are supportive of their patients' receiving treatments during therapy. In addition, acupuncture can provide personal attention in a safe and nurturing environment that helps to offset the overwhelming experience of cancer therapy.

WELLNESS AND PREVENTION

Because acupuncture works with the body's intrinsic energy, treatment can be done at any stage of illness. In fact, it is even better if done when there is no illness present in order to prevent a condition from occurring. A skilled acupuncturist can detect potential problems by checking the pulse and looking at the tongue and can give a treatment or make recommendations to help prevent future problems. Very often, small changes in diet and/or lifestyle can result in increased health and vitality. Many people choose to have acupuncture treatments at regular intervals, i.e. monthly, for a "tune-up" to promote wellness.
